@DirtySouthSoc reported that the MLS (in their all-encompassing judge and jury) has officially told the Minnesota expansion franchise they must choose a new nickname as there are already enough teams named "United". Their fans are understandably upset by this and have even gone so far as to start a change.org petition to ask Garber & Co. to reconsider their decision.

Personally, I could care less if Minnesota wants to call themselves United. If they like United as well, then so be it. However, in their online petition they threw a cheap shot at ATL, saying, "There are a half dozen metros in the US & Canada that could justify being called United, Atlanta is not one of them by any definition." Petition also requests AUFC be made to change our name if they can't have it either...which is over-the-top ridiculous and asinine.

There's an awful lot of hate already towards us. This doesn't help that much.

Yea, lots of controversy here. From what I read though, they got the name United really because the last guy to buy the team, and current owner I think, had a business that had United in the name. UnitedHealth group. He did it to help promote his business as well as the team. You don't hear that part though...

I personally don't really care if Minnesota has the name of United or not. They will be called the Loons by almost everyone anyway. They have completely different colors. The name does fit for them and all they have been through with that club, even if it does come from a business venture and branding purposes. I don't see any harm in letting them keep it.
